It happens to the best of us. Even the healthiest eaters, meditators and yogis get taken down every now and then. The statistics for flu this year are pretty staggering with over 80% of the flu involving a particulary tough strain called H3N2. I’d say about that same percentage of my patients are coming already had or currently experiencing this nasty flu. So what do we do? We try and prevent it first.
1. Drink lots of water: yeah yeah you already fill up your Nalgene at least 2 times a day nice work but lets be more specific. One of my mentors teaches for every 50 pounds of body weight you have to drink one liter of water and then add two more. Ex: 150 pound woman is drinking 3 liters plus 2 more. So that’s 5 liters of water a day. And we aren’t just talking about any water; water that is filtered and clean. Unfortunately tap water just has too much fluoride, chlorine, presecription medications etc in it for it to be a flu fighting liquid. All those toxins just bogs the body down even more. Clean, filtered water continually renews and washes away toxicity; bugs and does a host of amazing things for the body. In fact, I have seen patients get rid of many ailments simply by increasing hydration. Water is water. This means tea and coffee don’t count towards your water goal.
Clean. Filtered. Water. And a lot of it.
2. Cut out those sugars; nom nom nom…. A bug’s favorite food is sugar. One of the best ways to make sure those flu bugs are populating and creating their perfect home in your body is to feed them sugar. Yes this includes chocolate. L But it also includes sugar in your coffee; bread and pasta which break down into sugar in your body and those afternoon cookies that show up at the office when everyone is crashing. Until the flu season comes to a close avoid the sugar and your waist line and immune system will thank you.
3. Vitamin D3: First off it’s January so I’m going to go ahead and guess you’re
vitamin D deficient. I was taught draw a horizontal line across the United States starting at LA and everyone north of there is Vitamin D deficient. It’s impossible to get enough sun in those places throughout the year. And now I live south of that line and guess what; everyone’s labs are still showing vitamin D deficiency. The lab standards will also tell you that if you are around a 50 you’re in a great range; I like to see my patients anywhere from 70-90 so you’ll usually have to supplements more than 2000 IU’s a day to get there. Not only is it antiviral but its super important to the immune system. Having your levels in normal range automatically cuts your chances for getting the flu in half! I’m not a fan of target brand vitamin D3 so find your trusted health practitioner or doctor and get a trusted brand and get those levels up!
4. Garlic: Its possible that your co-workers may be appalled by your breath but when you’re the only one who is still healthy at the office who cares! Garlic has been used for centuries as a powerful medicine. Garlic can be crushed, chewed or sliced to produce allicin, which is thought to give garlic its immune-boosting properties. Studies have shown that its not only preventative but even after you get sick, garlic can help lower the severity of the illness and help you recover faster. The trick is to not over cook it to keep all the properities intact.
